Accessibility, education and relationships are key

We’re supporting health equity for underserved communities across America.

Increasing accessibility
  • Nearly 9,000 retail pharmacies and 300+ community-based specialty pharmacy locations, including many in areas high on the social vulnerability index (SVI), enable equitable access of services and products.
  • During the pandemic, initiatives such as free home delivery in medically underserved communities, spurred a lift in refill rates.
Fostering beneficial alliances
  • Our partnership with Vitamin Angels in select Chicago stores offers prenatal vitamins to vulnerable patients.
  • Vaccine information is always available, and during the height of the pandemic, we collaborated with the government to distribute free masks.
Providing ongoing education for patients
  • Our pharmacists provide consultations at various stages of a patient’s journey to answer any questions and help address barriers to adherence, including possible side-effects.
  • Patients receive unmatched, expert chronic condition-specific education and assistance so they can remain adherent to their medication.

Walgreens health equity efforts are narrowing the gap in healthcare for medically underserved communities and providing tailored solutions that help achieve positive patient outcomes.

We help patients overcome barriers to healthcare

Walgreens is committed to helping keep patients on their medication therapy and overcome any barriers to adherence. This includes helping patients in underserved and socially vulnerable communities overcome transportation challenges. To achieve this, Walgreens created an initiative during the pandemic that delivered prescriptions to patients unable to pick up their medication at a Walgreens pharmacy.

Patients in predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods who used the delivery service saw the greatest improvement in the two-week refill rates.1
  • 3.4% increase for all neighborhoods
  • 4.5% increase for Black neighborhoods
  • 3.9% increase for Hispanic neighborhoods
