The combined value of projects both planned and underway in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region is estimated to be about $5.8tn, according to MEED Projects.

Recently, the build-up of increasing numbers of megaprojects budgeted into the tens or even hundreds of billions of dollars, coupled with their often decades-long delivery schedules, has come to present a growing challenge to attempts to evaluate the actual ongoing project activity.

Among the largest gas schemes in the region are the UAE’s $13.6bn Hail and Ghasha project

Major masterplanned transport schemes notably account for an outsized proportion of the biggest megaprojects currently in pre-execution

Overall, megaprojects within Saudi Arabia and the UAE account for close to half of all of the projects on the list

Fast facts

True to form, the most significant programmes are writ large on the regional project landscape, regardless of whether or not their entire stated or estimated budgets are taken into account. Saudi Arabia’s Neom City ostensibly remains the most valuable project in the Mena region.
