“The Independent Operator model is unique. There’s nothing else like it. It gives you the flexibility to grow your business without a corporate thumb over you. There’s a lot of freedom in it. You can adapt the store to your community and not have a schematic type of approach from corporate.”
-Ron Lenard , Roseville, CA Grocery Outlet Operator

At Grocery Outlet we've believed that there's a better way to grow a Grocery Chain. Instead of hiring managers and telling them what to do, we empower proven retail leaders to operate efficiently, take care of their families, and give back to their community.
Traditional Grocery Store Manager
VS. Independent Operator
Traditional Grocery Store Manager Job
  • No Autonomy. Little to no operational control of your store plus meddlesome, constant corporate oversight
  • Limited Income. Substandard pay regardless of how hard you work to improve your stores' bottom line.
  • Give Back. Little to no ability to get deeply involved and help your community.
  • No Team. Little to no decision on who you hire, when you work, or who you work with
Independent Operator
  • Operational Autonomy. Run your store the way you think is best - for you, your employees, and for your community.
  • Unlimited Income. Share in the profits with no earning caps. The more efficiently you operate, the greater your income. It's as simple as that.
  • Give back. Support your local community and truly impact the lives of your customers.
  • Your Team. You decide who you hire (including family members) and you make your own hours. Your family comes first.
Here's how it works:
The Grocery Outlet Model
280+ Stores Nationwide Generate Over $2.5 Billion In Annual Sales.

We buy overruns, surplus inventories, repackaged products, and perishable foods from notable national brands. We purchase these items in bulk and sell them to customers at deep discounts, often up to 60% below conventional grocery store retail prices.

But we're most proud of the fact that over 280 of our locations are run and operated by Independent Operators who share in the profits of their locations. The majority of these Independent Operators are former grocery store managers just like you.

How Much Can I Make?
Ask your average grocery store manager what they earn in a typical year, and the answers range from $60,000 to $120,000, with most making about $75,000 a year.
Grocery Outlet Independent Operators can earn over 4 times the typical grocery store manager salary.

Find Out If You’re The Right Fit

Do I Have To Make An Investment?

Yes. As joint owners, everyone of our Independent Operators made an initial investment to buy into their Grocery Outlet location. However, your investment is only a fraction of the millions of investment dollars that Grocery Outlet outlays to refurbish or build a new retail location.
Most of our current Independent Operators invested approximately $205,000 before assuming control of store operations.

What If I Can’t Afford To Invest $205,000?

We still want to talk to you. We understand that not every successful grocery store manager has $205,000 burning a hole in their pocket - so don't worry. No matter what, it’s important to talk to us even if you don’t have capital on hand because we offer an opportunity to finance the majority of the initial investment to ex-grocery store managers with the drive to be intimately involved in their business, and the ambition to be successful. And remember, 220+ other folks just like you have already transitioned from overworked and underpaid grocery store managers to successful business owners. You've heard and read their testimonials on this page. If you have a successful track record of managing grocery stores, we can figure out the initial investment together. Bottom line, you owe it to yourself and your family to learn more about Grocery Outlet. Enter your information below and get our free Independent Operator guide.
