Northern has started the commercial operation of its upgraded Class 170 train, which mainly runs between York and Leeds via Harrogate in the UK.

The train is the 100th refurbished unit in Northern’s fleet and represents the company’s comprehensive modernisation programme.

The Class 170 train is equipped with improved seats and lighting to offer a brighter and more comfortable journey to its passengers, as well as free Wi-Fi and power outlets.

The upgraded train is designed to provide 50% more capacity than the Pacer trains they replace.

“The train is the 100th refurbished unit in Northern’s fleet and represents the company’s comprehensive modernisation programme.”

Northern Engineering director Ben Ackroyd said: “The refurbishment of our fleet is an ongoing programme of work and, ultimately, our customers will be travelling on trains, which are not only cosmetically better but will also all feature free Wi-Fi, at-seat power, high-definition CCTV and customer information media screens.”

The company has already upgraded 27 Class 150s, four Class 155s, 24 Class 156s, nine Class 158s, four Class 170s, and 32 Class 319 trains.

Northern also intends to enhance more than 400 stations by 2020 and has already completed the work at more than 100 stations.

Improvements are expected to help customers buy tickets through improved mobile applications and will involve the launch of more than 600 additional ticket machines at stations throughout the north of England.
