The Government of Victoria in Australia has opened the Registration of Interest (RoI) process seeking applications from interested parties to deliver the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.

The proposed rail link will connect the city’s central business district to the airport through Sunshine.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan opened the RoI application process which calls for expressions of interest from businesses, investors and constructors with experience in similar projects.

The RoI process will help the government assess the level of interest among potential private companies to develop the rail link, as well as evaluate their individual capabilities.

Government agency Rail Projects Victoria will be responsible for leading the process.

"A world-class airport rail link won’t only connect the CBD and the airport but deliver massive benefits to regional Victoria."

Allan said: “The search is on to find the best providers to develop a world-class airport rail link, that won’t only connect the CBD and the airport but deliver massive benefits to regional Victoria.”

Construction works for the rail link are scheduled to start in 2022.

In April, the federal government announced a A$5bn investment for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.

The project will also form the north-western section of the underground Suburban Rail Loop, a proposed rail network to connect all lines around the city’s suburbs.

Andrews said: “We’re already building the Metro Tunnel, removing level crossings, and expanding our roads, now if re-elected we’ll build the Melbourne Airport Rail Link and Suburban Rail Loop our state needs.”
