Germany-based light rail operator Rheinbahn Düsseldorf has installed iCOM digital platforms provided by Knorr-Bremse on three of its vehicles.

Installation began in June and is expected to help Rheinbahn improve efficiency, as well as reduce downtimes and costs of the vehicles.

In January, Knorr-Bremse and Rheinbahn Düsseldorf started their joint iCOM project.

Knorr-Bremse has equipped several Type NF8U (low-floor eight-axle metro) light rail vehicles with iCOM.

The vehicles were built between 2006–12 and are operated by Rheinbahn.

Knorr-Bremse also provided all necessary hardware and software solutions to support wireless data transfer from Rheinbahn’s light rail vehicles to workshops.

"Transmission of data from moving vehicles will help improve the organisation of workshop operations, reduce vehicle downtimes and cut operating costs."

Designed to serve as the central data hub, iCOM is used to monitor the condition of the rail vehicles in order to help operators perform predictive maintenance and reduce associated cost.

Other data provided by iCOM helps to analyse the performance of energy-consuming components to facilitate timely intervention, improved maintenance and greater efficiency.

Knorr-Bremse Executive Board member and representative of Rail Vehicle Systems division Dr Jürgen Wilder said: “The online transmission of data from moving vehicles will help improve the organisation of workshop operations, reduce vehicle downtimes and cut operating costs.

“This project also breaks new ground in terms of the close collaboration between fleet operator and component manufacturer.

“Through iCOM, Knorr-Bremse’s proximity to the customer leads to high availability of the vehicle fleet and falling operating costs.”

Knorr-Bremse Group is based in Munich, Germany and is primarily engaged in the manufacturing of braking systems. The company also supplies safety-critical sub-systems for rail and commercial vehicles.
