Deutsche Bahn has ordered an additional 18 seven-car ICE 4 trainsets and 50 more power cars in a bid to expand its fleet.
The order will be jointly supplied by Siemens Mobility and Bombardier Transportation with the former supplying two-thirds of the ordered vehicles.

The newly ordered power cars can be coupled with the previously ordered 50 ICE 4 trainsets in a 12-car configuration to expand it to 13 cars.
Deliveries of the seven-car trainsets are expected to begin in 2023, while the 13-car trainsets will be supplied after delivery of the 50 12-car trains is completed in 2021.
The new order values around €198m of the overall €610m contract.

The ICE 4 allows 24 different trainset configurations on five car types to the operator offering maximum flexibility in operations.
The free configurable design is enabled by deploying the power cars, which are equipped with all key traction components and traction power units beneath the floor.
A 12-car ICE 4 driven by six power cars and a 13-car unit by seven power cars is capable of running at a top speed of 250km/h.
It is expected to allow DB to deploy modify vehicle configurations according to passenger or route requirements.
Overall, DB will procure 1,511 train cars, which can be configured into 50 12-car, 50 13-car and 37 seven-car trainsets. The remaining two cars will be kept as reserve.
The longer 12-car and 13-car versions will operate across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while the seven-car trains will run in Germany and Austria.
