Railway rolling stock manufacturer Stadler has introduced its first Traverso low-floor FLIRT train for Swiss railway company Südostbahn (SOB).

Stadler is to deliver a total of six eight-car and five four-car trains to SOB under a contract signed at the end of June 2016.

The new trains, which will replace the older units, will operate on the Voralpen-Express route between St. Gallen and Lucerne.

The new vehicles are expected to be rolled out on the route once the new train timetable changes are implemented in 2019/2020.

Designed to provide greater comfort and travelling experience, the eleven vehicles feature quality interior fittings customised to fulfil the requirements of passengers.

They feature panoramic windows, separate places to stow skis and bikes, catering areas, power outlets and an information system with between four and seven screens for each train car.

All trains meet the latest European legislation that ensures easy access for the handicapped people.

The eight-car trains have a seating arrangement for around 359 passengers, while the four-car trains can seat 197 people.

With a lightweight aluminium construction, the trains can operate with lower fuel consumption and at a maximum operating speed of 160km/h.

The vehicles will also feature some of the most distinct characteristics of the FLIRT family such as step-free entrances and spacious interiors.
