The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in the US has selected Jacobs as the principal design consultant for the Cotton Belt Regional Rail Corridor Project.

Jacobs will assist the joint venture (JV) of Archer Western Construction and Herzog Contracting.

Overall, it will provide design and oversight services for track alignments, drainage, bridges, retaining walls, stations and signalling systems. DART values the contract at $1.1bn.

The 26-mile long Cotton Belt rail project stretches from the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport to Shiloh Road Station in Plano. It will also offer connectivity to three existing DART light-rail lines; the Orange, Green and Red lines.

Additionally, it will be connected with the Trinity Metro TEXRail, a 27-mile-long regional commuter line between DFW Airport and downtown Fort Worth.

The design-build works of the Cotton Belt rail project are expected to be completed by 2022.

Once operational, the line will improve rail transportation in the region, connecting major employment, population and activity centres.

In February, Jacobs, along with its JV partners, secured a six-year contract to support the modernisation of the Red and Purple Lines in Chicago, US.
