Dutch railway infrastructure operator ProRail has deployed Cambridge Broadband Networks’ (CBNL) 26GHz VectaStar solution in order to provide wireless backhaul for a new CCTV system at major railway stations.

The company initially deployed VectaStar across 15 railway stations, providing a carrier-grade network using CBNL’s PMP millimetre wave technology to deliver the organisation’s security and surveillance system.

CBNL collaborated with integrated security systems provider VCS Observation to carry out the project. VCS provided network deployment and integration services.

“We’re delighted with how streamlined the deployment has been and the exceptionally high levels of service VectaStar is providing.”

VCS Observation owner and CEO Wim van Deijzen said: “By utilising PMP technology and 26GHz spectrum, we’ve been able to offer an unprecedented level of efficiency and performance.

“We’re delighted with how streamlined the deployment has been and the exceptionally high levels of service VectaStar is providing.”

More than 200 CCTV cameras that are connected by ProRail using the VectaStar network are installed both inside and outside locations across major railway stations, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

The carrier-grade network service costs up to 50% less than legacy point-to-point or fibre technology.

CBNL CEO Lionel Chmilewsky said: “ProRail is benefiting from a VectaStar network that offers sub-millisecond latency, up to 600Mbps capacity and dedicated bandwidth for a highly secure service.

“The fact these advantages can be delivered at a fraction of the cost compared to alternative technologies is causing more and more network operators to deploy the technology, a trend we expect to grow significantly over the coming years.”
