UK’s Network Rail has submitted plans to the local council for the construction of a £10.55m station on the Durham coast.

Plans have been developed in collaboration with Durham County Council and will involve building a station at Horden near Peterlee.

Two 100m platforms, a footbridge and shelter will be constructed, along with a 120 space car park and an adjacent bus stop.

Council leader and councillor Simon Henig said: “It has been a long time coming and required a lot of hard work, but it is very pleasing to see this key project reach such an important stage.

“A new station is sorely needed in the east of our county and, if agreed through the planning process, this would be a great boost to the local economy, providing much better access to employment opportunities for local people.”

In 2016, a public consultation on the plans received 1,400 responses with 98.6% of the local people endorsing the project.

It is estimated that more than 70,000 passengers will use the station on South East View annually.

The application has been forwarded to the council’s planning department for consideration.

Once approved, construction works are expected to begin early next year and will be funded by Durham County Council.

The project will also receive £4.4m from the Department for Transport’s New Station Fund and a grant from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.

Network Rail principal programme sponsor Aidan Talbott said: “Network Rail is delighted to be working with the council in the design and delivery of the new station for Horden and Peterlee.

“It is rewarding to work together on a project, which is forecast to be so beneficial for the community and which has had such positive responses during public consultations thus far.”

The station will connect Horden to the local and national train network with hourly trains running in both directions.
