Germany-based Municipal utility group SWU Verkehr has inaugurated a nearly 10km long tram line.

The new Line 2, which is the city’s second tram line, will connect Ulm’s Science City with the Kuhberg district.

SWU Verkehr has deployed the Avenio M trams ordered from Siemens Mobility to support operations on the line.

In May 2015, the municipal utility group awarded a contract to Siemens for the delivery of 12 multi-articulated trams from the Avenio M series.

All 12 trams, which have been delivered, will operate across the Ulm’s entire tram network (Lines 1 and 2).

Featuring a modular, multi-articulated design, the Avenio M trams are modified to operate on the steep-graded Ulm tram routes.

Additionally, the trams are equipped with Siemens Tram Assistant, which utilises lidar and radar sensors to alert drivers about potential hazards, thereby increasing operational safety.

They also feature a weight-optimised aluminium body and the latest electrical systems to reduce energy consumption.

Last month, Siemens received a contract to supply six type G1 metro trains to Nuremberg’s public transport operator VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft in Germany.

These four-car G1 trains will operate on the U1 metro line from 2021.
