The Government of Western Australia (WA) has selected Bellevue as the preferred location to build a new A$1.6bn ($1.18bn) Metronet railcar manufacturing facility.

To be located around 1km from the Midland Workshops, the new site will be co-located with the Public Transport Authority’s railcar depot.

A development application for the facility has been submitted to the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, with approval expected in the coming weeks.

The Bellevue railcar facility will be used to assemble most of the additional 246 railcars required for Metronet projects, creating significant employment opportunities in the region.

“Metronet is not only a world-class public transport system, but will create new opportunities for local workers.”

The government has already started a tender process to procure the railcars, which will also replace the old vehicles operating on the Transperth network.

Rolling stock manufacturers Alstom Transport Australia, Momentum West (CAF and UGL) and EDI Rail – Bombardier Transportation consortia have been shortlisted for the tender process.

The supplier is expected to be selected the beginning of next year.

Western Australia (WA) Premier Mark McGowan said: “It’s exciting we are in a position to bring trains well and truly back into the Midland precinct at a new purpose-built facility in Bellevue.

“Metronet is not only a world-class public transport system, but will create new opportunities for local workers. The key target of 50% will help revitalise WA’s manufacturing industry and put WA jobs first.”

In the first stage, the Bellevue railcar facility is scheduled to deliver 102 new railcars, comprising 17 six-car sets, by 2021.

Another 144 railcars made up into 24 six-car sets are expected to be delivered in the subsequent stage between 2023 and 2028.
