UK’s Network Rail has awarded six rail signalling and telecoms (S&T) contracts with a combined value of around £750m.

Awarded under the Control Period 6 (2019-2024), the contracts are segregated into six geographical lots.

The contract involves delivering level crossings, stand-alone major telecoms and associated civil works.

Contracts were awarded to VolkerRail Special Businesses, Atkins, Linbrooke Services, Babcock Rail Ltd, Colas Rail and Siemens.

Network Rail signalling commercial director Martin Robinson said: “The S&T framework awards are the first awards in a three-tier approach to signalling delivery for CP6, which aims to recognise the differing signalling work banks we have to deliver.

“This is the first of three framework tiers to be awarded and part of a strategy enabling Network Rail and the signalling supply chain to be more innovative.”

“The awards have gone to signalling suppliers that between them have many years of signalling experience on our railway and will help Network Rail facilitate key signalling renewals over the coming years.”

The contracts for the two remaining tiers, minor and major signalling, will be awarded in June this year and January 2020.

These two contracts, which will include simple component replacement and major re-signalling and re-controlling works, will complete the three-tier strategy for CP6 signalling delivery.

Network Rail signalling programme director Kevin Robertshaw said: “Our strategy for delivering signalling works in CP6 focuses on bringing the supplier closer to the client and facilitating a more integrated way of working.

“This is the first of three framework tiers to be awarded and part of a strategy enabling Network Rail and the signalling supply chain to be more innovative, collaborative and effective.”

Last week, Network Rail awarded a €36m contract to Siemens to upgrade the GSM-R cab radios for the entire rolling stock fleet in the UK.
